[Saki and Lauren are seated on the floor inside the gas station's carryout. Lauren leans back against a stack of plastic pallets with her legs crossed in front of her, while Saki sits cross-legged. On the floor between them, the boxy ejection seat kit from Saki's plane lies next to Lauren's rucksack. They watch the rain through the windows.]

Saki: So what about your family? Did they...?
Lauren: Nah. They're a ways away.

[Lauren fidgets with her gloves as she speaks, looking down at her hands..]

Lauren: I was actually born here. Lived here up until I was 6. Then, uh... then we moved because my parents split up.
Saki: Ah, I see. Mine are divorced, too. I know it's rough. 'Specially that young.
Lauren: Eh.

[Saki is taken aback.]

Lauren: Anyway. I came back here on my own. I was here right after it all went down.
Saki: What, did you HITCHHIKE here?
Lauren: Some of the way, yeah.
Saki: Jesus.
